The Stave and the Sword

The Stave and the Sword
An opening attack
Bond sees a guard’s stave and recognizes that it may counter Blofeld’s sword. He strikes Irma Bunt first, preventing her from reaching an alarm, then faces Blofeld at close quarters.
The stave gives Bond reach, but Blofeld is skilled and cuts it down during the exchange. Bond is wounded and forced back toward the wall.
A brutal finish
Bond drops the ruined weapon and grabs Blofeld’s throat. The struggle becomes close and desperate, with each man trying to overpower the other rather than control distance.
Bond strangles Blofeld and eventually realizes that the fight is over. The victory is physical, but it is also the release of a vengeance he has carried since Tracy’s death.
A Valve Turned Closed

A Valve Turned Closed
Remembering the device
Bond recalls the control wheel in the Question Room and returns to the volcanic chamber. He uses Blofeld’s sword to break open the box and finds the valve mechanism.
He turns the wheel closed, uncertain what the action will cause. His decision stops the geyser’s system but sets a much larger chain of events in motion.
Escape blocked
Bond returns to find that the guards have closed off his original route. He breaks a window and climbs onto a narrow terrace, carrying only Blofeld’s kimono and sword.
His victory has not given him a safe exit. The castle is closing around him as danger builds below and behind him.
The Balloon Escape

The Balloon Escape
A desperate leap
With the terrace ending above a sheer drop, Bond notices the tether of the warning balloon. He climbs onto the railing, cuts a foothold in its banner, and launches himself into the air.
The helium balloon lifts him over the park and toward the sea. Gunfire punctures it as the castle begins to erupt in a mass of flame and destruction.
Survival at a cost
Bond loses consciousness and falls into the water as the damaged balloon descends. The escape saves him from the explosion but leaves him injured and unable to orient himself.
His apparent triumph gives way to vulnerability. The mission has destroyed the Castle of Death, but its final consequences will be determined by the people waiting beyond its walls.
